Kalamba Mango Processing Factory and Community Socio-Economic Wellbeing in Makueni County, Kenya

The role of government-owned processing factories in Kenya’s economic development is immense, as they contribute significantly to value addition, job creation, and industrial growth. However, limited research has been conducted on the socio-economic effects of such factories on the surrounding communities. The study aimed to examine the impact of Kalamba Mango Processing Plant on the socio-economic condition of the community in Makueni County. In particular, it involved the impact of the factory on the livelihoods of mango farmers, factory workers and small-scale entrepreneurs. The study was conducted using the descriptive research design. Two theories underpinned this research: New Public Management (NPM) theory, underpinned by efficiency, accountability and performance in public enterprises; and the Agency Theory, which helped to explain the relationship between the principals (the local community) and the agents (plant managers) in ensuring the plant operates in the community's best interests. The target groups were mango farmers, staff in the Kalamba mango processing plant and small business operators in Makueni County. Using stratified sampling, a total of 115 respondents were selected. Additionally, interviews with key informants that included factory management, government officials and cooperative leaders were done to complement the quantitative data, with the help of an interview schedule. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered and analyzed for the presence of emerging patterns and insights from the interviews conducted. The research findings indicated that the newly established Kalamba mango Processing Plant has created job opportunities, especially for youth and women and boosted household income as a result of reliable market access for mango farmers. Furthermore, the plant has provided opportunities for the growth of micro businesses like food kiosks, transport services and local shops, resulting in overall community development. It is concluded that well-managed and well-integrated government owned processing plants can have a significant positive impact on rural socio-economic development. The results offer important policy guidance to policy-makers, development planners and investors in enhancing agro-industrial development as a key driver of inclusive economic growth in Kenya and elsewhere.
