Customer churn presents a significant threat to business sustainability, particularly in the beverage industry where competition and shifting consumer preferences are intensifying. This research investigates customer churn at City Breweries, a brewery in Zimbabwe, with the aim of developing a robust predictive model using machine learning techniques. The study utilizes historical sales and operational data such as dispatch volumes, returns, mileage, and delivery routes to identify patterns associated with customer churn. Multiple classification algorithms, including Logistic Regression, Decision Trees, Random Forest, Support Vector Machines (SVM), AdaBoost, Extra Trees, and XGBoost, were implemented and compared using key performance metrics, accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score. The results highlight XGBoost as the most effective model for churn prediction due to its ability to handle class imbalance, capture non-linear relationships, and deliver superior predictive performance. While models like Logistic Regression and Decision Trees offer simplicity and interpretability, they fall short in capturing complex interactions within the data. XGBoost’s regularization mechanisms and gradient boosting framework enhance its generalization capabilities, making it well-suited for real-world deployment. This study provides actionable insights into customer retention by identifying customers with a higher risk of churning with high accuracy. It also contributes to the existing body of knowledge by demonstrating the efficiency of ensemble machine learning models in the beverage sector, an area which is under explored in churn prediction research.
